Home Remedies for Lips

While dry, chapped lips are most often associated with cold climates and harsh winds, they can afflict anyone in any climate at any time. Eskimo kisses have their charm, but you can make sure that your lips stay hydrated and kissable in any weather with these simple and inexpensive ideas for home lip remedies.

Drink water

It may sound like a no-brainer, but drinking water and plenty of it can keep your lips (and the rest of you) hydrated and healthy from the inside out. You may feel as though you drink sufficient water, but chapped lips are often one of your body's chief ways of telling you it needs more. Try drinking another glass or two each day, especially in the winter months. If you do not find water palatable, try adding a splash of lemon or a flavored drink mix.

Lock in moisture at night

Your body replenishes each system while you sleep, and moisturizing your lips before you go to bed can help them stay hydrated all day. You do not need an expensive lip treatment; a little dab of night cream or hand cream followed by petroleum jelly locks in moisture inexpensively.

Make a lip scrub

No matter how much you moisturize your lips, it is important to exfoliate them at least once a week to remove dead skin. You can do this with a warm wet washcloth, or you can make your own lip scrub. Mix honey with some sugar or salt and a little vegetable oil, scrub for a few minutes on your lips and rinse. You can even make this in bulk to use at home or to give as gifts.

Protect your lips from the sun

Just like the rest of your body, your lips need protection from the sun. Invest in a quality lip balm with SPF, and make sure to apply it daily.

With just a few simple habits and supplies, you can ensure that your lips stay fresh and kissable naturally. Your lips and those they kiss are sure to thank you.
